What you need to know
Materials:
Students should bring the necessary materials from their supply list to SS class every day! Every day, students should have their binder/folder with all notes, homework assignments, and summative assessments organized into the correct location. They should also have pencils, pens, highlighters and coloring tools (colored pencils, crayons, every day as well.
Assignments:
Homework – Students will be assigned homework on a nearly daily basis. At the start of each day's class, the homework will be written down into their agenda during class, the Warm Up will be answered, completed homework must be present on students' desk, and the Word of the Day will be defined and recorded. Their homework will also be posted on calendar on this website. Homework will be checked in class, and the Agendas will be stamped/signed daily to see if students are recording their homework faithfully.
Quizzes and Tests – Students will take quizzes every week. Quizzes will assess students' comprehension of the Words of the Day or the skill we focus on in class during that unit. Students will also take pre-assessments and they will be in charge of tracking their own growth based on their quiz scores! A data table will be stored in their SS binder/folder. Tests will be given at the end of every unit, and will be preceded with a Study Guide several days in advance, also posted on this website.
Classwork - Students will complete Seminars, journal entries, Current Event Summaries, and work in groups to make up their Classwork grade. Classwork counts three times more than Homework.
Projects – Students will work on projects throughout the year related to the curriculum to enhance their learning along the way. Projects will count as a test grade in the grade book!
Grading Breakdown:
60% Assessments: Tests, Quizzes, and Projects
30% Classwork
10% Homework
Expectations:
1. Students are expected to follow all Moore Square Middle School rules, as well as established classroom rules and procedures. Seventh grade students will be issued lockers in the first two weeks of school.
2. Students are expected to turn in all assignments! If they fail to do this, they will have lunch detention until the assignment is made up.
3. Students are responsible for their learning, please do not hesitate to ask questions, or seek out help. Seventh grade tutoring is on Tuesday afternoons. Students must have a tutoring pass filled out by a parent and turned in at least 24 hours before tutoring in order to stay after school.

I attended East Carolina University, where I earned a B.S. in Secondary Education in English/English. |

I love Moore Square. And you students are the biggest reason why. Ms. Houghton and I will be teaching you the basics of what it means to succeed in this life, in a future job, visiting parts of the world someday, starting a family, earning money, on the internet, or defending your freedom. I graduated from University of California, Davis with my Bachelors in History, and earned my Teaching Credential in Secondary School from University of California Sacramento. My Academically Gifted Certification came from Johnston County and my Masters in Medieval Studies from N.C. State University. I earned my National Board Certification most recently. |
